G. M. ‘Tom’ Bunning helped to drive the rise of Bunnings as one of the great successes of Western Australian private enterprise and a household name nationwide. The youngest son of the company’s founder, Tom joined Bunnings on the eve of the Great Depression and remained throughout the long post-war boom, before laying the foundations for the eventual takeover of Bunnings by Wesfarmers in 1991. Joseph Christenson is the author of a new biography, Not Just a Bunnings Man: The Life and Times of ‘Tom’ (G.M) Bunnings.

Join Dr Alan Hancock as he explores the rapidly shifting dynamics between humans and artificial intelligence. As AI systems evolve from simple tools into sophisticated digital advisers and companions, the boundaries of connection are being fundamentally redrawn. Many people have tried out romantic relationships with AI companions and some have found the AI bots preferable to human partners. Alan will examine how these systems now influence our emotional landscapes, and what this tells us about where our societies are headed.

Meet there. Make your own way into the Perth Cultural Centre. Your choice to either wander around the exhibits in the Gallery, head over to the State Library to visit the JS Battye Library, or both (free entry). A walk to Charlie Boy Coffee for a light lunch (at own expense) and the Blue CAT to Elizabeth Quay to catch our Captain Cook River Cruise from Barrack Street Jetty. Enjoy a relaxing cruise to Fremantle and back, admiring the waterfront scenery of Perth’s downtown skyline, the famous Point Walter spit and beautiful cliffs including Black Wall Reach. After a short stop in Fremantle we will return on the boat to Barrack Street Jetty. High Tea will be served on this return journey with a glass of sparkling wine (included). Arriving back in Perth around 5pm, we then make our own way home from Elizabeth Quay.

Learn about Kelli’s research into awareness of coercive control in Australia, and how this has been embedded into an international collaboration with other researchers in Denmark, Northern Ireland and Singapore.
